RITUAL FOR THE TRANSMISSION OF THE BHIKKHU ORDINATION, BODHISATTVA PRECEPTS, AND THE LAMP TRANSMISSION WITHIN THE PH\u00c1P NH\u00c3N GRAND ORDINATION PLATFORM<\/span><\/div>\n
The Bhikkhu ordination ceremony is a solemn ritual in Buddhism, marking an important event when a monastic aspirant, after two years of training as a novice (\u015br\u0101ma\u1e47era), has studied and applied the Dharma in daily life, cultivated a pure monastic life, and aspires toward enlightenment and the highest spiritual liberation.<\/span><\/div>\n
Today, under the witness and support of the venerable monastic elders, the practitioner, having accumulated sufficient meritorious conditions, is formally received into the Sangha with full monastic precepts.<\/span><\/div>\n
The Bhikkhu ordination ceremony consists of the following main sections:<\/span><\/div>\n
I. Fundamental Qualifications for Bhikkhu Ordination<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
* A candidate for Bhikkhu ordination must fulfill the following qualifications:<\/span><\/div>\n
* Has already received novice ordination (S\u0101ma\u1e47era)<\/span><\/div>\n
* Is at least 20 years of age according to chronological age<\/span><\/div>\n
* Possesses the complete set of three robes, an alms bowl, and a sitting mat<\/span><\/div>\n
* Is free from major disqualifying obstacles in accordance with the Vinaya (monastic discipline)<\/span><\/div>\n
* Has an ordination Preceptor (Upajjh\u0101ya) and a Dharma Teacher (\u0100cariya) for proper guidance<\/span><\/div>\n
* Has successfully completed the pre-ordination examination before the Bhikkhu ordination platform.<\/span><\/div>\n
II. The Assembly of the Three Masters and Seven Witnesses<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
1. The Three Masters<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n
The Most Venerable Ordination Preceptor (Upajjh\u0101ya): The chief officiant who confers the ordination precepts.<\/span><\/div>\n
The Most Venerable Karma Preceptor (Kammav\u0101c\u0101cariya): The preceptor who presides over the formal monastic procedure (kamma).<\/span><\/div>\n
The Most Venerable Dharma Teacher (\u0100cariya): The preceptor who instructs monastic discipline and monastic rules of conduct (Vinaya).<\/span><\/div>\n
2. The Seven Witnesses\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
The Seven Witnesses are seven fully ordained and pure Bhikkhus who act as witnesses, confirming the validity and purity of the ordination according to the Vinaya.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Total number<\/span><\/strong>: The Ten Venerable Masters (<\/span>comprising the Three Masters and the Seven Witnesses<\/span>)<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n
III. Order of the Bhikkhu Ordination Ceremony<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
1. Request to Enter the Ordination Platform<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n
The ordinand, properly robed and carrying the complete requisites of robes and alms bowl, with body and mind kept pure, respectfully enters the ordination ground.<\/span><\/div>\n
Before the Venerable Sangha, the ordinand pays homage to the Triple Gem, then kneels with palms joined in reverence and respectfully makes a sincere request.<\/span><\/div>\n
The ordinand respectfully declares: \u201cHaving generated the aspiration to seek ordination and having already received the novice (S\u0101ma\u1e47era) precepts, I now, with sufficient meritorious conditions, respectfully request the compassionate permission of the Sangha to formally enter the ordination platform and seek Bhikkhu ordination.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
After paying homage and making the formal request, the ordinand respectfully awaits the approval of the Sangha before proceeding to the subsequent steps of the ceremony.<\/span><\/div>\n
The above is a general overview of the Bhikkhu ordination ceremony.<\/span><\/div>\n
Next is the detailed presentation of each step of the Ph\u00e1p Nh\u00e3n Ordination Platform<\/span>, held on May 17, 2026, during the Vesak (Buddha\u2019s Birthday) Grand Ceremony<\/span><\/strong>.<\/span><\/div>\n
Bhante Sudchai<\/span><\/strong>, acting as the Kammav\u0101c\u0101 Master (Kammav\u0101c\u0101cariya), asks:<\/span><\/div>\n
Bhante Th\u00edch Tr\u00ed Quang<\/strong><\/span>, acting as the Ceremonial Officiant, responds:<\/span><\/div>\n
\u2013 Has the Sangha assembled?<\/span><\/div>\n
The Sangha has assembled.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u2013 Is the Sangha harmonious?<\/span><\/div>\n
The Sangha is harmonious.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u2013 Have those who have not yet received full ordination left the assembly?<\/span><\/div>\n
They have left.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u2013 For what purpose has the Sangha assembled today?<\/span><\/div>\n
To perform the Kamma of full ordination (Upasampad\u0101).<\/span><\/div>\n
\uf0d8 Venerable Sudchai<\/span><\/strong>, serving as the Kammav\u0101c\u0101 Master (Kammav\u0101c\u0101cariya), speaks:<\/span><\/div>\n
\uf0d8 Revered Venerable Sangha,<\/span><\/div>\n
Today, the ordinand Ph\u00e1p H\u1ef7 L\u1ea1c<\/span><\/strong> requests full ordination (Upasampad\u0101) and respectfully requests Bhikkhu Th\u00edch Tr\u1eebng S\u1ef9<\/strong> to serve as his Upajjh\u0101ya, Ordination Preceptor<\/span><\/strong>.<\/span><\/div>\n
If it is appropriate for the Sangha, may the Sangha approve Bhikkhu Th\u00edch Tr\u1eebng S\u1ef9<\/strong> to serve as the Ordination Preceptor.<\/span><\/div>\n
This is the formal announcement<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u2663 The ordinand Ph\u00e1p H\u1ef7 L\u1ea1c<\/span><\/strong> kneels before the Venerable Sangha, prostrates once, and then respectfully makes the following request:<\/span><\/div>\n
Revered Venerable Ones of the Sangha, I, the disciple known by the Dharma name Ph\u00e1p H\u1ef7 L\u1ea1c, respectfully place my trust in your compassionate witnessing presence.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
I humbly request the Venerable Ones to act as my Ordination Preceptor (Upajjh\u0101ya), the Kammav\u0101c\u0101 Master (Kammav\u0101c\u0101cariya), the Dharma Teacher (\u0100cariya), and the Witnessing Elders. I rely upon the wisdom, virtue, and compassion of the Venerable Ones in order to receive the Full Ordination (Bhikkhu Upasampad\u0101).\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
I sincerely beg the Venerable Ones to compassionately accept me, to guide me, and to grant me the opportunity to enter the monastic life as a fully ordained monk.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
1) Bhante Gnanaratana<\/span><\/strong>, acting as the Ordination Preceptor (Upajjh\u0101ya), replied:<\/span><\/div>\n

\u2192 \u201cSadhu! Well done. You should <\/span>devote yourself wholeheartedly to pure practice and not be negligent.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2663\u00a0 The ordinand Ph\u00e1p H\u1ef7 L\u1ea1c<\/span><\/strong> replied:<\/span><\/div>\n
I shall abide by your instructions<\/strong><\/span>. (Three times)<\/span><\/div>\n
2) Bhante Somisara<\/span> <\/strong>declares in a loud voice:\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
\u2192 Venerable Great Assembly of the Sangha, I respectfully inform you that the ordiand Ph\u00e1p H\u1ef7 L\u1ea1c<\/span><\/strong> now requests to receive the full ordination (Upasampad\u0101) from the Great Sangha.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
At this appropriate time for the Sangha, may the Sangha consent to appoint Bhikkhu Th\u00edch Tr\u1eebng S\u1ef9<\/strong>, the Upajjh\u0101ya, Ordination Preceptor of Ph\u00e1p H\u1ef7 L\u1ea1c, to serve as the Dharma Teacher (\u0100cariya).\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
This is the formal announcement of invitation and request<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/div>\n
3) The Dharma Teacher (\u0100cariya) Th\u00edch Tr\u1eebng S\u1ef9<\/strong> asks:<\/span><\/div>\n
\u2192 As an ordinand who is about to receive Bhikkhu ordination, one must be properly equipped with the three robes, an alms bowl, and a sitting mat:<\/span><\/div>\n
This is the antarv\u0101sa (inner robe),<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
this is the uttar\u0101sa\u1e45ga (upper robe),<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
this is the sa\u1e45gh\u0101\u1e6di (outer robe),<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
this is the alms bowl,<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
this is the sitting mat.<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
Are these three robes, the bowl, and the sitting mat your possessions<\/strong>?<\/span><\/div>\n
\uf0d8 The Ordinand, Ph\u00e1p H\u1ef7 L\u1ea1c<\/span><\/strong>, replies: Yes, they are<\/strong>.<\/span><\/div>\n
4) Bhante Gunaratana<\/span><\/strong>, serving as the Kammav\u0101c\u0101 Master (Kammav\u0101c\u0101cariya), conducting the examination of the Ordinand Ph\u00e1p H\u1ef7 L\u1ea1c<\/span><\/strong>:\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
\u2192 According to the Dharmaguptaka Vinaya of the Northern Tradition<\/span>, the meaning of the Bhikkhu Ordination Ceremony is as follows:<\/span><\/div>\n
To continue the lineage of the Buddha\u2019s Dharma-life,\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
to enter the pure and harmonious Sangha community,\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
to formally undertake the mission of propagating the Dharma,\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
to become a field of merit for gods and humans, and<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
to study, practice, and apply the Buddha\u2019s teachings and the Vinaya that one has undertaken<\/span><\/strong>.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u2192 \u2192 \u2192 Venerable Gunaratana, Venerable Sudchai, and Venerable Th\u00edch Tr\u1eebng S\u1ef9<\/span><\/strong> take turns asking the thirteen questions concerning obstacles to ordination.<\/span><\/div>\n
\uf0d8 The Ordinand Ph\u00e1p H\u1ef7 L\u1ea1c<\/span><\/strong> answers each question with \u201cYes<\/span>\u201d or \u201cNo<\/span>,\u201d as appropriate.<\/span><\/div>\n
OBSTRUCTION-INQUIRY QUESTIONS DURING BHIKKHU ORDINATION<\/span><\/div>\n
I. Fundamental Qualifications\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
1. Are you male?<\/span><\/div>\n
2. Have you reached the age of twenty years (counted by calendar age)?<\/span><\/div>\n
3. Do you have the ability to learn, understand, and observe the Bhikkhu discipline (Vinaya)?<\/span><\/div>\n
4. Do you possess the robes, alms bowl, and all necessary requisites as required by the Vinaya?<\/span><\/div>\n
5. Do you have an Ordination Preceptor (Upajjh\u0101ya) and a Dharma Teacher (\u0100cariya) who properly guide you in accordance with the Vinaya?<\/span><\/div>\n
II. The Aspiration to Enter the Monastic Life<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
6. Do you fully and voluntarily wish to renounce worldly life and receive this ordination?<\/span><\/div>\n
7. Are you under any compulsion or pressure from family, society, or any individual that prevents you from freely deciding to receive this ordination?<\/span><\/div>\n
8. Is your aspiration for monastic ordination sincere, steadfast, and firmly grounded?<\/span><\/div>\n
9. Are you firmly resolved to live the holy life, aiming for liberation?\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
III. Worldly and Family Bonds<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
10. Do your parents or legal guardians consent to your ordination?<\/span><\/div>\n
11. Are you currently bound by marriage, engagement, or any unresolved romantic relationship?<\/span><\/div>\n
12. Do you have children or anyone who depends on you for care or financial responsibility?<\/span><\/div>\n
13. Do you have any family responsibilities that you are unable to leave behind?<\/span><\/div>\n
IV. Legal Statues and Personal Freedom<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
14. Are you currently involved in any legal issues, disputes, being wanted by authorities, or under investigation, arrest, or legal proceedings?<\/span><\/div>\n
15. Are you currently subjected to forced labor, dependency, or any form of coercion regarding your personal status or freedom?<\/span><\/div>\n
V. Financial Statues<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
16. Are you currently in debt to any individual or organization that has not yet been repaid?<\/span><\/div>\n
VI. Health and Practice Capacity<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
17. Do you have any serious or chronic illness that affects your ability to study and practice the Dharma?<\/span><\/div>\n
18. Do you have any severe disability that affects your daily life, study, and observance of the monastic precepts?<\/span><\/div>\n
VII. Monastic History and Discipline<\/span><\/div>\n
19. Have you ever received Bhikkhu ordination or returned to lay life after ordination?<\/span><\/div>\n
20. Have you ever been subject to disciplinary action, punishment, or expulsion by the Sangha due to serious violations of the monastic precepts?\\<\/span><\/div>\n
VIII. Basic Ethical Conduct<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
21. Have you ever committed any act of theft or serious fraud?<\/span><\/div>\n
22. Have you ever intentionally taken life or caused serious harm to the life of any sentient being?<\/span><\/div>\n
IX. Final Confirmation<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
23. Is the information you have provided about yourself, your family, your past, your health, and your conditions for ordination true and complete?<\/span><\/div>\n
24. Apart from the matters already asked, are you aware of any other reasons or obstacles that could affect your eligibility for Bhikkhu ordination?<\/span><\/div>\n
MAH\u0100Y\u0100NA BODHISATTVA PRECEPTS ORDINATION CEREMONY<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
In the presence of, and under the witness, guidance, and support of the Great Sa\u1e45gha, the ordinand Ph\u00e1p H\u1ef7 L\u1ea1c<\/span><\/strong> receives the Bodhisattva Precepts. Bhante Gu\u1e47aratana<\/span><\/strong> continues to give instruction:<\/span><\/div>\n
In the presence of the Great Sa\u1e45gha, serving as witness and support, the ordinand Ph\u00e1p H\u1ef7 L\u1ea1c<\/span><\/strong> receives the Bodhisattva Precepts.<\/span>
