Therefore, I should never belittle myself or retreat in discouragement.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%;\">\u2014 Chan Master Guishan Dayuan<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%;\">2. It is the starting point of the Bodhisattva path and the fundamental cause and condition leading to the attainment of <em>Anuttar\u0101-samyak-sa\u1e43bodhi<\/em> (\u7121\u4e0a\u6b63\u7b49\u6b63\u89ba, Supreme Perfect Enlightenment).<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%;\">The Buddha and the Patriarchs taught: \u201c<span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">If the cause is not true and upright, the result will become distorted<\/span>.\u201d (\u56e0\u5730\u4e0d\u771f\uff0c\u679c\u62db\u8fc2\u66f2). If the initial cause is not pure and correct, the later result will be difficult to achieve in perfection. Therefore, generating Bodhicitta is precisely the planting of the seed for attaining Buddhahood.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%; color: #ff0000;\">I. What is Bodhi?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%;\">Bodhi means Enlightenment, referring to the perfect wisdom that clearly realizes the truth of impermanence, non-self, causality, dependent origination, and emptiness. Through this wisdom, all afflictions are eradicated, suffering is brought to an end, and complete liberation is attained. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%;\">This is the very wisdom of all Buddhas.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%; color: #ff0000;\">II. What does \u201cArousing the Mind\u201d mean?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%;\">Arousing the mind means allowing the awakened mind to arise and gradually grow stronger. Just as a seed can become a tree only when it is planted, nurtured, and cared for, Buddha-nature, though inherently present within all beings, remains only a latent potential if it is not awakened and cultivated.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%;\">Arousing the mind is to awaken that seed of enlightenment and begin the journey of spiritual cultivation.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%;\">For example, someone may aspire to become a Buddhist and take refuge in the Three Jewels, but realize that they have not yet fully gathered the necessary conditions. At that time, we should understand that favorable conditions do not arise by themselves; rather, they must be cultivated through diligent practice, learning, and wholesome actions. By accumulating sufficient wholesome causes and conditions, we can eventually fulfill our noble aspirations.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%; color: #ff0000;\">III. What is arousing Bodhicitta?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%;\">Arousing Bodhicitta means arousing the great aspiration to attain Buddhahood for the benefit of all sentient beings, rather than seeking liberation solely for oneself. This spirit is encapsulated in two expressions:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u4e0a\u6c42\u4f5b\u9053 (Th\u01b0\u1ee3ng c\u1ea7u Ph\u1eadt \u0111\u1ea1o \u2014 Seeking the Buddha Way Above)<\/span>:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%;\">Diligently practicing and learning, eliminating afflictions,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%;\">developing wisdom, and attaining Buddhahood.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u4e0b\u5316\u773e\u751f (H\u1ea1 h\u00f3a ch\u00fang sinh \u2014 Transforming and Guiding Sentient Beings Below)<\/span>:<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%;\">Using compassion to help, teach, and guide all sentient beings toward enlightenment and liberation.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%;\">This is the noble ideal of the Bodhisattva path, harmoniously integrating self-awakening and awakening others, as well as wisdom and compassion.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%;\"><em>K\u1e63itigarbha<\/em> Bodhisattva is renowned for His great vow and boundless compassion. He made this vow:<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%;\">\u201c<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Until hell is empty, I will not become a Buddha.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Only after all sentient beings have been liberated will I attain Enlightenment<\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%;\">This means: As long as there are beings suffering in the hell realms, He vows not to attain Buddhahood. The Two Aspects of Bodhicitta<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%;\">Bodhicitta consists of two inseparable aspects:<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1. Aspiration Bodhicitta<\/span> (<em>Pra\u1e47idh\u0101na<\/em> Bodhicitta):<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%;\">The arising of the aspiration to attain Buddhahood and the vow to liberate all sentient beings. This is the initial step, like a person who has made the decision to embark on a journey toward a noble and lofty goal.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">2. Engaged Bodhicitta<\/span> (<em>Prasth\u0101na<\/em> Bodhicitta):<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%;\">Transforming aspiration into action by practicing morality, generosity, patience, diligence, meditation, and the cultivation of wisdom; that is, practicing the Six P\u0101ramit\u0101s for the benefit of oneself and others.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%;\">An aspiration without practice is difficult to fulfill; practice without a great aspiration can easily lose its direction. Just as a king stands at the head of a nation, Bodhicitta stands foremost among all virtuous states of mind.
