Through this journey, He laid an important foundation for the establishment and development of Vietnamese Buddhism in France and throughout Europe. Through the founding and nurturing of Dharma centers, the building of Kh\u00e1nh Anh Grand Temple, the strengthening of the Sangha, the cultivation of future generations, and the fostering of community bonds, He not only established enduring institutions but also planted a profound spiritual and cultural legacy for generations to come. Although He has entered Parinirvana, His noble aspiration continues to live on through those who carry forward His legacy, through Kh\u00e1nh Anh, and through the path of the Buddha-Dharma that He opened. The many works he initiated, the Buddhist centers and communities he nurtured, the generations of monastics and lay Buddhists he guided, and his lifelong commitment to safeguarding and upholding the Dharma all contributed to a lasting and meaningful legacy for Vietnamese Buddhism in the diaspora.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%; color: #000000;\">His lay name was L\u00ea Minh T\u00e2m, and he was born on January 18, 1940, in Thanh L\u01b0\u01a1ng Village, Ch\u00ed C\u00f4ng Commune, Tuy Phong District, B\u00ecnh Thu\u1eadn Province. He was raised in a family with a longstanding tradition of faith in and devotion to the Three Jewels. His father was L\u00ea Minh Quang, who later entered the monastic life and received the Dharma name Th\u00edch Minh H\u1eefu; his mother was H\u1ed3 Th\u1ecb Lang, whose Dharma name was Nguy\u00ean M\u1ef9.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%; color: #000000;\">It was in this family environment, deeply imbued with faith in the Buddha Dharma, that the seed of renunciation was planted early in the heart of young L\u00ea Minh T\u00e2m. In 1949, at the age of just nine, he left his family home and entered monastic life at B\u1eedu T\u00edch Pagoda in H\u00f2a \u0110a, B\u00ecnh Thu\u1eadn, where his Preceptor bestowed upon him the Dharma name Nguy\u00ean C\u1ea3nh. From that first step through the gate of monastic life, his life took a new direction: taking the Three Jewels as his refuge, Buddhist study and practice as his foundation, and service as his life\u2019s guiding ideal.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%; color: #000000;\">The early years of his monastic life were a formative period during which he was trained both in spiritual cultivation and in the foundations of Buddhist learning. In 1953, he went to Nha Trang to pursue his studies at the Sangha Training Institute of H\u1ea3i \u0110\u1ee9c Buddhist Institute. Within the Buddhist educational environment of the time, he devoted himself to the study of Buddhist scriptures, monastic discipline, and the Dharma, while gradually maturing in the disciplined and dignified way of life of a monastic.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%; color: #000000;\">From 1962 to 1967, he served as a Dharma Lecturer for the Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam in Ph\u00fa Y\u00ean Province, while also teaching at B\u1ed3 \u0110\u1ec1 Tuy H\u00f2a High School. A Dharma talk may help listeners gain a deeper understanding of a Buddhist teaching, but a truly meaningful education can help shape the character of an entire generation. For him, therefore, education and Dharma propagation were not two separate paths. Education was the planting of seeds of virtue; Dharma propagation was the nurturing of those seeds so that Buddhist teachings could become a way of life. During those years of profound social upheaval in Vietnam, a monastic\u2019s commitment to education carried an even greater significance, for it was not merely a matter of imparting knowledge, but also of helping to cultivate character, awaken ideals for living, and foster a sense of responsibility toward society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-14090 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/phapnhan.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/mi-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phapnhan.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/mi-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/phapnhan.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/mi-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/phapnhan.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/mi-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/phapnhan.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/mi.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%; color: #000000;\">In 1967, after receiving full Bhikkhu ordination, he entered a new phase of his monastic and scholarly journey by traveling to Japan. From 1967 to 1968, he studied the Japanese language in Tokyo. From 1968 to 1973, he continued his studies in Buddhist Studies and Buddhist philosophy at Rissho University in Tokyo. His years in Japan not only broadened his academic knowledge but also enabled him to experience a long-established Buddhist culture, observe the ways in which Buddhist life and activities were organized in a different society, and gain further experience in fostering community life. Alongside his studies, he also took part in organizing Buddhist activities for the Vietnamese community in Japan. These experiences later became invaluable preparation for his journey to France, where the Vietnamese community was gradually establishing a stable life and increasingly needed a space that could serve spiritual, cultural, and communal purposes.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%; color: #000000;\">In 1973, he left Japan and traveled to France. This marked a major turning point in his life of Dharma practice and service. Upon arriving in a country far from his homeland, where the Vietnamese community was still gradually establishing a stable life, he soon recognized that Vietnamese people living abroad needed more than a place of worship. They also needed a spiritual home\u2014a place where the Vietnamese language, Buddhist chanting, the bonds of the Dharma, fellowship among compatriots, and cherished cultural values could be preserved and passed down through generations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-14091 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/phapnhan.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ch-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phapnhan.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ch-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/phapnhan.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ch-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/phapnhan.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ch-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/phapnhan.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ch.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%; color: #000000;\">From this understanding, in 1974, he founded Kh\u00e1nh Anh Buddhist Practice Center (Ni\u1ec7m Ph\u1eadt \u0110\u01b0\u1eddng Kh\u00e1nh Anh) in Arcueil. From its humble beginnings as a modest place of Buddhist practice, Kh\u00e1nh Anh gradually became a gathering place for monastics, lay Buddhists, and Vietnamese compatriots. In 1977, the center was relocated to Bagneux, on Avenue Henri-Barbusse, to accommodate the community\u2019s growing needs. On February 19, 1979, the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Main Buddha Hall in Bagneux was held.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%; color: #000000;\">Looking back on that journey, it becomes clear that Kh\u00e1nh Anh was not merely the name of a temple. Above all, Kh\u00e1nh Anh was the embodiment of a profound aspiration. From a small Buddhist practice center to a larger Buddhist institution; from a place of worship to a center for Buddhist practice and learning; and from a practice center to a hub of community life, each stage reflected the sustained dedication and painstaking efforts that the Venerable Master devoted to nurturing and developing it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-14092 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/phapnhan.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/WBXN9429-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phapnhan.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/WBXN9429-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/phapnhan.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/WBXN9429-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/phapnhan.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/WBXN9429-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/phapnhan.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/WBXN9429.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%; color: #000000;\">He understood that, for people living far from their homeland, a temple needed to be more than simply a shelter and a Main Buddha Hall. It also had to be a place where people could find peace, where children could learn about their heritage and traditions, where the elderly could once again hear the familiar sounds of Buddhist chanting and the Vietnamese language, where monastics could have a supportive environment for spiritual practice, and where the community could come together in the bonds of the Dharma.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%; color: #000000;\">From Bagneux, an even greater aspiration gradually took shape: to build a grand Buddhist temple spacious enough to serve as a center for Buddhist practice, learning, and community life for the Vietnamese community in France and throughout Europe. On June 18, 1995, the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of Kh\u00e1nh Anh Grand Pagoda in \u00c9vry was held.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%; color: #000000;\">This was a project to which the Most Venerable Master devoted tremendous effort and energy, mobilizing support, overseeing its construction, and guiding monastics, lay Buddhists, and the wider community in bringing it to fruition. A great undertaking could not be completed overnight. It required time, financial resources, human resources, and above all, a faith strong enough to enable people to persevere through the long years. The project continued to be developed and completed over many years, carried forward by successive generations after his passing. In 2008, His Holiness the Dalai Lama came to the site to attend and witness the ceremony while the Grand Pagoda was still under construction. After many years of construction, the Grand Pagoda officially opened its doors to the public in 2016. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%; color: #000000;\">The event carries a profound meaning: those who sow the seeds of great aspirations do not necessarily have to live to see them blossom. The person who initiates a great undertaking may not live to see it completed, but if the aspiration is strong enough and passed on in the right way, future generations will continue to nurture it and help those seeds grow.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%; color: #000000;\">Kh\u00e1nh Anh Grand Pagoda is therefore not merely an architectural structure. It is a Buddhist practice center\u2014a place where monastics study and practice, where Buddhists return for spiritual nourishment, and where retreats, major Buddhist ceremonies, and other religious activities are held. At the same time, it serves as an important cultural gathering place for the Vietnamese community. Over time, the pagoda has transcended the meaning of a mere place of worship to become a space for religious practice, education, culture, and community life. In this broader sense, the Kh\u00e1nh Anh project can be regarded as one of the most significant legacies of Most Venerable Th\u00edch Minh T\u00e2m\u2019s lifelong dedication to propagating the Dharma.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-14094 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/phapnhan.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/mm-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phapnhan.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/mm-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/phapnhan.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/mm-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/phapnhan.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/mm-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/phapnhan.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/mm-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/phapnhan.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/mm.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%; color: #000000;\">If building a pagoda means creating a place where the Dharma can flourish, then building the Sangha means nurturing the people who will carry the Dharma forward. This was an aspect to which Most Venerable Th\u00edch Minh T\u00e2m paid particular attention. At a time when the Vietnamese community was dispersed across many European countries, maintaining Buddhist life and activities in the Vietnamese language required connections among temples, monastics, and lay Buddhists that transcended geographical boundaries. He played an important role in the formation and development of the Unified Buddhist Congregation of Vietnam in Europe, and later served as Chairman of its Executive Council.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%; color: #000000;\">For Most Venerable Th\u00edch Minh T\u00e2m, the Buddhist Congregation was not merely an organizational structure. It was meant to be an environment in which the Sangha could be sustained, Buddhists could find refuge, the tradition could be preserved, and future generations could have the opportunity to grow and mature. In 1983, he was elevated to the rank of Senior Venerable. In 1999, in Oslo, Norway, he was elevated to the rank of Most Venerable and was also invited to assume an important leadership responsibility within the Li\u1ec5u Qu\u00e1n lineage overseas. Through these activities, a deeply connected Vietnamese Buddhist community gradually took shape across Europe.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%; color: #000000;\">At numerous Great Ordination Ceremonies in the United States, Canada, Australia, and Europe, he was also invited to undertake important responsibilities in the ordination ceremonies and in the education and training of monastics. These responsibilities reflected the breadth of his influence, which extended far beyond Kh\u00e1nh Anh and France to Vietnamese Buddhist communities around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-14097 \" src=\"https:\/\/phapnhan.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/thichminhtam.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1007\" height=\"1439\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%; color: #000000;\">The Most Venerable Master\u2019s activities and influence gradually extended beyond the Vietnamese Buddhist community into the international Buddhist arena. From 2006 until his passing in 2013, he served as Vice President of the World Buddhist Sangha Council (WBSC). On July 8, 2011, in Colombo, Sri Lanka, he was presented with an honorary award by the World Buddhist Sangha Council and the Government of Sri Lanka in recognition of his significant contributions to the propagation of the Buddha Dharma in Europe and the United States.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%; color: #000000;\">In the final year of his life, he also served as President of the Supreme Council of Buddhist Elders in France. From a young novice who entered monastic life in B\u00ecnh Thu\u1eadn, his journey took him through Vietnam, Japan, France, and various international Buddhist communities. For a monastic, protecting the Dharma does not necessarily mean merely safeguarding a temple. From Arcueil in 1974 to Bagneux in 1977, and then to the Kh\u00e1nh Anh Grand Temple in \u00c9vry beginning in 1995, Kh\u00e1nh Anh has journeyed alongside and grown with the Vietnamese Buddhist community in France.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%; color: #000000;\">From a once-small and emerging community, the Vietnamese gradually established a more stable life. After a period of treatment, at 9:29 a.m. on August 8, 2013, French time\u2014equivalent to 10:29 a.m. Finnish time\u2014he peacefully entered Nirvana in Turku, Finland. According to commemorative records, he passed away at the age of 75, having spent 64 years in the Buddhist life and 46 years in the monastic Sangha. What has been cultivated through sincere devotion to the Dharma and selfless service continues to live on in the hearts of others. He left behind Kh\u00e1nh Anh Grand Pagoda, Buddhist practice centers, a living tradition of Buddhist study and practice, generations of monastics and lay Buddhists, a Buddhist institutional tradition, and a spirit of service to the community. These values cannot be measured in material terms or by titles and honors, because the greatest legacy of a venerable elder ultimately lies in the people whose lives he has touched and shaped.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%; color: #000000;\">A pagoda may be built of bricks and stone, but for it to become a true Buddhist practice center, it needs people. An organization may be established through formal documents, but for the Buddhist Church to remain vibrant, it needs people who preserve their devotion to the Dharma and uphold the spirit of harmony. Above all, it means upholding a life of Buddhist study and practice, maintaining ethical discipline, building a harmonious Sangha, nurturing and training future generations, propagating the True Dharma, serving the community, and preserving the Vietnamese Buddhist tradition in the diaspora.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%; color: #000000;\">In particular, even after his passing, the name of Most Venerable Th\u00edch Minh T\u00e2m has continued to be honored in public life in France. Of particular significance is the fact that this street lies alongside Kh\u00e1nh Anh Grand Pagoda, the very project to which he devoted decades of his life, from its inception to its realization.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%; color: #000000;\">If Kh\u00e1nh Anh Grand Pagoda is the tangible embodiment of an aspiration brought to fruition through the efforts of many generations, then the street bearing his name stands as a testament to the recognition bestowed by the local community upon a figure who helped shape its spiritual and cultural life. He was also a highly respected elder monk and an eminent figure in the Vietnamese Buddhist community overseas. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%; color: #000000;\">However, a life of spiritual practice cannot be measured merely by the number of positions held or titles bestowed. A life of service must be seen through what remains after the one who served has departed. From Ph\u00fa Y\u00ean and B\u00ecnh \u0110\u1ecbnh, he embarked upon a path of Buddhist education and Dharma propagation. From Vietnam to Japan, he broadened his Buddhist studies and deepened his experience in Buddhist service within an international setting. From Japan to France, he began a new chapter in his journey \u2014 establishing and nurturing Vietnamese Buddhism in the heart of Europe. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%; color: #000000;\">From a small Buddha-recitation Hall in Arcueil, Kh\u00e1nh Anh gradually took shape in Bagneux and eventually developed into a great temple in \u00c9vry. From a Buddhist practice center, he helped build a community; from a community, he helped build a Buddhist Sangha; and from France, his influence in Buddhist service extended to many countries across Europe and further into the international Buddhist community.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%; color: #000000;\">It was a long journey, but that journey was shaped by far more than material works and physical structures. It was built upon faith, moral discipline, wisdom, perseverance, and a heartfelt aspiration to serve. He departed in accordance with the law of impermanence, yet what he planted continues to endure. Kh\u00e1nh Anh remains a place where monastics and lay Buddhists return. The practice center continues to thrive. The Dharma continues to be transmitted. The generations that follow continue to carry the path forward. And today, a road bearing his name stands beside the great temple whose construction he had aspired to undertake. Together, they form a simple yet profound reminder:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%; color: #000000;\">A human life will eventually pass, but a life lived true to its ideals can leave a path for those who come after. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 160%; color: #000000;\">Therefore, the most meaningful way for future generations to honor the Most Venerable Master is not merely to recount the institutions He established or the responsibilities He once shouldered. A practitioner passes through this life and leaves behind the fragrance of the Dharma. Perhaps this is also a beautiful image through which to contemplate the life of the late Most Venerable Elder Master Th\u00edch Minh T\u00e2m: a life lived amid the changing tides of history, yet with a heart and aspiration ever devoted to the Three Jewels; a life devoted to practicing and spreading the Dharma in a foreign land, while always carrying within it a deep love for his homeland and the aspiration to propagate the Buddha-Dharma; a life of building and laying foundations through the hands of the present generation, yet guided by a vision for generations to come.
