Although time has constantly been elapsing, the Happy Spring is eternally present in you and in me, in families and in Dharma Centers, in all places, and everywhere.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>The Happy Spring, called as the Spring of <em>Maitreya Buddha<\/em> or the Peaceful Spring, is authentically present in us. Whenever we are aware to keep control of our breaths, words, thoughts, and actions mindfully and consciously right here and right now in the present life.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>Relying on the title of this writing, when encountering the word \u201cHappiness,\u201d we can find out it through varied aspects and angles, especially through Sutras<em>,<\/em> verses, thoughts, and the meanings of the Buddhadharma in the Dhammapada, Verse 194 as follows: <em>\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>\u201c<em>Happy is the birth of the Buddha,<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Happy is the noble Dhamma,<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Happy is the harmonious Sangha,<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Happy is the Fourfold Community in peace and concord together.<\/em>\u201d<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>As you know, happiness gets felt via many various aspects and angles, but happiness which is felt best is happiness derived from \u201c<em>the body of peacefulness<\/em>\u201d and \u201c<em>mind of liberation<\/em>\u201d of each one of us. That is the most precious gift that we can offer it to ourselves and to our loved ones on occasion of the new Spring. Based on the above verse of <em>Dhammapada, <\/em>we discover the word \u201c<em>happiness<\/em>\u201d to be present in the Buddha\u2019s teachings, we in turn learn more about its meanings below.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>In <em>Sanskrit <\/em>or <em>P\u0101li<\/em>, happiness with its root is \u201c<em>Sukha.<\/em>\u201d<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a> According to Monier-Williams (1964), \u201c<em>Sukha<\/em>\u201d has two separate words: \u201c<em>Su<\/em>\u201d and \u201c<em>Kha.<\/em>\u201d \u201c<em>Su<\/em>\u201d means \u201c<em>good<\/em>\u201d and \u201c<em>Kha<\/em>\u201d means \u201c<em>axle<\/em>.\u201d \u201c<em>Sukha<\/em>\u201d literally means \u201c<em>good axle.<\/em>\u201d For example, a vehicle with a good axle can run fast, far, and durably. Of course, it must still depend additionally on other factors such as wheels, gas, engine oil, etc. Likewise, when having \u201c<em>True Happiness,<\/em>\u201d we can practice the Dharma and transform unwholesome seeds into wholesome seeds. We can spread the cultivated hearts of loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and inclusiveness to all living things and living beings to help add happiness and alleviate suffering for life.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>When performing so well, we have to have the methods of specific practice such as loving speech, deep listening, prostration of the Buddha, recitation of the Buddha\u2019s names, Meditation practice in mindfulness and awareness daily to recharge our spiritual battery. From this, we can enjoy the peaceful taste of practice, we can bring the flowers and fruits of peaceful joy and happiness to the many right in the present life.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>We know happiness; its revere is \u201cunhappiness\u201d and \u201csuffering.\u201d Cultivation is a process so that we can recognize and transform unhappiness and suffering into peaceful joy and happiness. In Buddhist terminology, the authentic meanings of \u201c<em>Sukha<\/em>\u201d is \u201c<em>True Happiness<\/em>.\u201d In the \u201c<em>Sutta of True Happiness,<\/em>\u201d (<em>Mangala Sutta<\/em>) the part V of <em>Sutta-Nip<\/em><em>\u0101<\/em><em>ta, <\/em>belonging to <em>Khuddaka Nik\u0101ya<\/em>, referring to the values of \u201c<em>True Happiness Sutta<\/em>\u201d we can learn, understand, apply, and enjoy its peaceful taste of the Buddhadharma from the early Spring of the New Year up to the end of Spring of life. With our joyful and relaxed minds, we would like to invite you all to read and contemplate the \u201c<em>Sutta <\/em>of <em>True Happiness<\/em>\u201d together happily.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>\u201cThus have I heard. Once the World-Honored One was dwelling in Savatthi at Jeta\u2019s Grove, Anathapindika\u2019s garden. When the night was nearly ended, there was a certain deity with his surpassing radiance who illuminated the entirety of Jeta\u2019s Grove, approached and bowed down to the World-Honored One. After having paid homage to the World-Honored One, the deity stood at one side and addressed the World-Honored One in verse as follows:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Deities and human beings<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>That think about happiness,<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Wish to obtain happiness <\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>What is true happiness?<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>Invite the World-Honored One to teach it.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>He replies with the verse:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Avoiding the foolish,<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Associating with the wise,<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Paying homage to those who are worthy of homage,<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000; font-size: 170%;\"><strong><em>This is true happiness.<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Choosing a wholesome place to reside,<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Having made merits in past life,<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Keeping one\u2019s heart right and straight,<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000; font-size: 170%;\"><strong><em>This is true happiness.<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Understanding broadly and being skillful in handicraft,<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Observing the Precepts perfectly,<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Talking together with loving speech,<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000; font-size: 170%;\"><strong><em>This is true happiness.<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Serving mother and father,<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Cherishing spouse and children,<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Not being attached to trouble,<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>This is true happiness. <\/em>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Giving and living in integrity,<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Helping one\u2019s relatives,<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Deeds are no blameful,<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000; font-size: 170%;\"><strong><em>This is true happiness.<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Preventing evil,<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Giving up intoxicants,<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Being assiduous in the right way,<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000; font-size: 170%;\"><strong><em>This is true happiness.<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Being respectful and humble,<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Knowing contentment and gratitude,<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Learning the Dhamma on timely occasions,<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000; font-size: 170%;\"><strong><em>This is true happiness.<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Being patient and obedient,<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Visiting monks and nuns,<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Discussing the Dhamma on timely occasions,<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000; font-size: 170%;\"><strong><em>This is true happiness.<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Being pure and diligent,<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Understanding the Noble Truths clearly, <\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Carrying them out and being happy with Nibbana<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>This is true happiness.<\/em> \u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Being in touch with the world,<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Keeping one\u2019s mind unshaken,<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Sorrowless, dustless, and peaceful,<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000; font-size: 170%;\"><strong><em>This is true happiness.<\/em> \u00a0<\/strong><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Those who train in the aforesaid teachings like that,<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Can easily achieve anything,<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>\u00a0Live peacefully in any place.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000; font-size: 170%;\"><strong><em>This is true happiness.<\/em>\u201d<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a><\/strong><strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>Via the \u201c<em>Sutta <\/em>of <em>True Happiness<\/em>,\u201d we know happiness has the authentic values when it gets felt by our peaceful bodies and liberated minds. We can rewrite this as \u201c<em>happiness about our bodies<\/em>\u201d and \u201c<em>happiness about our minds.<\/em>\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>\u201c<em>Happiness about our bodies<\/em>\u201d means when making human bodies, we are fortunate to have full hands, legs, eyes, ears, nose, tongue, etc. Via applying and practicing the Buddhadharma daily, we can enjoy the Dharma happiness when our hands and legs have enough health to walk in meditation, sitting in meditation in mindfulness. Our eyes are still bright to see our loved ones being present and helping each other. Our ears are still clear to listen to the Dharma talk and hear bird singing. Our noses are still healthy to breathe in and out mindfully and consciously. Our tongues are still healthy to taste the flavors of Dharma happiness.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>Moreover, \u201c<em>happiness about our bodies<\/em>\u201d means we are aware to observe living things and living beings, protect human properties, live a life of peaceful joy and happiness by saying words of usefulness, love, cuteness to everyone and every home. Aware not to take varied kinds of narcotics, wine, beer, smoking, consumption of violent and depraved films, photos, and newspapers. We should spend time doing charitable activities such as devotion to building bridges, roads, helping poor students, and lonely and needy families. Thus, \u201c<em>happiness about our bodies<\/em>\u201d means we live and do the benefits for others and ourselves right in the present life.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>On the other hand, through learning, understanding, applying, and enjoy the Dharma joy and Dharma happiness in the daily life, \u201c<em>happiness about their bodies<\/em>\u201d is not only intended for those having enough hands, legs, eyes, ears, noses, etc., but also for those lacking one of their most precious parts. Unfortunate people who can also approach the Buddhadharma from an instructor whether hear it by ears, say and sing it by their mouths, or feel it by their minds, etc., so they can enjoy the Dharma happiness from themselves.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>The instructor of the <em>Buddhadharma<\/em>, who can be a monastic, lay person, a teacher, or a volunteer, instruct practitioners to go to the shore of coolness, fragrance, that is, to that of peaceful joy and happiness. That instructor, who can be a <em>Maitreya <\/em>Buddha, loves and understand, lives with his\/her heart of joy, inclusiveness, and lives for others.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 170%; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>Next is \u201c<em>happiness of our minds<\/em>;\u201d \u201c<em>happiness of our minds<\/em>\u201d means we have enough good conditions to learn, understand, practice the Dharma, and enjoy the feelings of its peaceful joy.
