On the occasion the World-Honored One was staying at <em>Jetavana<\/em> Monastery wholeheartedly offered by <em>Sudatta Anathapindika <\/em>and Prince <em>Jeta<\/em>. On a beautiful day, lay male devotee <em>Sudatta <\/em>along with five hundred devotees paid a visit and homage to Venerable <em>Sariputta<\/em> and other monastics. At that time, Venerable <em>Sariputta<\/em> used many skillful teachings to preach the Dharma to them, bring many joyful feelings of the Dharma practice, and help them arouse their confident hearts of thirsting for the Triple Gem.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <em>\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Then, Venerable <em>Sariputta <\/em>led them all to a hut of the Buddha, prostrated at his feet, and sat down respectfully to one side in mindfulness and awakening postures. The World-Honored One considerately taught them the key things devotees<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a> should be diligent to practice the Buddhadharma daily to bring peacefulness and happiness to themselves and to other people right in the present life. (Bell)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">The key things, namely, are the <strong>Five Ethical Trainings<\/strong> and <strong>Four Noble Contemplative Minds<\/strong>. If devotees lead their devotional and exalted lives, and regularly practice them right in the present life, they can obtain perfect peacefulness and happiness, contribute to bringing authentic peace to the many all over the planet. Coming at the time of death, they certainly know that they will not fall into the three evil realms: Hells, hungry ghosts, and animals. Upon understanding and practicing so, devotees have the ability to cultivate, transform their bodies and minds, attain the stream of holy fruition right in the present life.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>The First Ethical Trainings<\/strong><\/span>:\u00a0 Devotees who are determined to keep far away from all forms of killing living beings, including creatures. Be aware to nurture and arouse our loving-kindness and compassion hearts by protecting our and others\u2019 lives. Not killing ourselves, not killing living beings by ourselves, not telling other people to kill living beings, not inciting other people to kill living beings, and not seeing other people killing living beings, we rejoice to follow them. Aware to protect natural environment, give up weapons and violence, practice loving-kindness and compassion, transform anger and hatred, know to repent, correct, and be ashamed of wrong deeds. Thanks to understanding and practicing so, devotees have the ability to eradicate the roots of intention of killing living beings, lead their lives of peacefulness and happiness right in the world. (Bell)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>The Second Ethical Trainings<\/strong><\/span>: Devotees who are determined to keep far away from all forms of stealing, not to take what is not given, respect the possessions of other people, cherish almsgiving, help people go beyond needy circumstances, find joy before almsgiving, during almsgiving, and after almsgiving; almsgiving without regretting and almsgiving without expecting anything in return. Thanks to understanding and practicing so, devotees have the ability to transform and let go of their greedy and stingy hearts, lead their lives of integrity and altruism. (Bell)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>The Third Ethical Trainings<\/strong><\/span>: Devotee who is determined to keep far away from sexual misconduct and adultery lives faithfully with a legal spouse, stays away from kids\u2019 sexuality, spends a proper time looking after descendants, does not allow them to play violent games, limits them to play electronic games online, allows them to go to school, spends a suitable time helping them do homework, and teaches them understanding and love. Thanks to understanding and practicing so, devotees have the ability to build happiness for their families, and contribute to bringing peacefulness and happiness to schools and to societies. (Bell) \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>The Fourth Ethical Trainings<\/strong><\/span>: Devotees who are determined to keep far away from telling lies \u2013 only tell the truth, do not say anything deceitful and false \u2013 only say reliable and confident words, do not say anything separate and disharmonious \u2013 only say words of construction and suggestions, do not say anything rude and evil \u2013 only say polite and elegant words, do not say anything useless and meaningless\u2013 only say useful and meaningful words, do not say anything despicable, contemptuous, and reproachful \u2013 only say commendable, appreciative, and solidarity words, do not say anything critical, hasty, stressful, and angry \u2013 only say loving, affable, pleasant, harmonious, reconciling words. Thanks to understanding and practicing so, devotees who are worthy to get confident, have the ability to bring prestige and peace to many people. (Bell)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>The Fifth Ethical Trainings<\/strong><\/span>: Devotees are determined to keep far away from alcohols, intoxicants, smoking, and gambling, especially narcotics, to give up depraved and violent enjoyment habits, such as movies, newspapers, radio, television, not to buy, sell, product, and stockpile weapons and poisons, not to plant cannabis and opium, not to broker and trade in people and rare wildlife.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Be aware that the consumption and use of four kinds of daily nutriments comprise edible foods, feeling foods, volitional foods, and conscious foods in mindfulness and awareness, devotees can abandon and let go of those toxins. Thanks to understanding and practicing so, they can live healthy and lucid lives and contribute to bringing true peacefulness and happiness to themselves and to other people right in the present life. (Bell)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>The Five Ethical Trainings<\/strong><\/span> have been taught by the <em>Tathagata<\/em>, next are <span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>the Four Noble Contemplative Minds<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>The First Noble Contemplative Mind<\/strong><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Devotees should contemplate: \u201cThe World-Honored Buddha; the Master is our peaceful, noble, and spiritual Leader; the Master is the most worthy to be made offerings; the Master understands and loves; the Master has fully virtuous conduct and insight; the Master has obtained perfectly peacefulness and deliverance; the Master understands the world clearly; the Master has the ability to subjugate people; the Master of both gods and human beings; the Master attained enlightenment and awakening completely; the Master is worthy to be best honored and respected in the world.\u201d (Bell)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>The Second Noble Contemplative Mind<\/strong><\/span> Devotees should contemplate: \u201cThe Dharma of the World-Honored One that has been well proclaimed by the Buddha himself is very practical in the present, has value beyond time, has the ability to transform one\u2019s body and mind, has the ability to extinguish defilements of greed, anger, delusion, arrogance, doubt, wrong view, etc. Taking refuge in the Dharma, a wise one who can also cultivate oneself masters the Dharma, comes and sees, comes and hears, comes and understands, comes and learns, comes and practices, comes and enjoys the flowers and fruits of peacefulness and happiness right here and right now in the present life.\u201d (Bell)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>The Third Noble Contemplative Mind <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Devotees should contemplate: \u201cThe Sanghabody of the World-Honored One is the Community going on the really good, true, honest, beautiful, and appropriate path; the Community following the Buddhadharma practices the Buddhadharma, and lives correctly with the Buddhadharma. In the noble Community, there are those who have attained and are attaining the first holy fruition &#8211; the stream-enterer, the second holy fruition &#8211; the once-returner, the third holy fruition &#8211; the non-returner, \u00a0and the fourth holy fruition &#8211; <em>Arahant<\/em>, comprise four pairs and eight fruitions of holy people,<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a> accomplish all aspects of ethics, meditation, wisdom, deliverance, and deliverance with right understanding. This Community, deserving to be taken refuge in, served, respected, honored, admired, and made offerings, is the field of merit good for people to sow and to plant.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a> (Bell)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>The Fourth Noble Contemplative Mind<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\"> Devotees should contemplate: \u201cThe Dharma Precepts of the World-Honored One \u2013 the Disciplines (Vinaya) and right mindfulness the Sangha receiving, practicing, spreading, and observing are the perfect precepts (S\u012bla) body, are the never broken precepts body, are the never polluted precepts body, are the never spotted precepts body, are the never mingled precepts body, are the precepts body praised and admired by wise people, are the precepts body with the potential to protect freedom, are the precepts body leading us to fearlessness, are the precepts body leading us to ethics, meditation, wisdom, deliverance, and deliverance with right understanding, are the precepts body leading us to peacefulness and happiness forever.<em>\u201d<\/em><a href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\">[4]<\/a> (Bell)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Dear devotees, thanks to contemplating and practicing the four noble contemplative minds entirely, you have the ability to put an end to cravings, ignorance, unhappiness, sorrow, and suffering, transform afflictions of greed, anger, delusion, etc., go beyond the three evil realms: Hells, hungry ghosts, and animals, obtain happiness and great joy, build a Paradise or a Pure Land right on earth, and open up many stable and good directions for life. (Bell)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">After having proclaimed <strong><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\">the Five Ethical Trainings<\/span><\/strong> and the\u00a0<span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"><strong>Four Noble Contemplative Minds<\/strong><\/span> to devotees, the World-Honored One considerately summarizes a verse of easy-understanding example as follows:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">You who should be bright<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Know fear of the evil realms<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Diligently practice the Dharma<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">To transform all sufferings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Observing <strong>the Five Ethical Trainings<\/strong>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Not killing living beings<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Nourishing the compassion heart<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Leading lives of less sickness and sorrow<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Your longevity always increases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Not taking what is not given<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Letting go of your stingy hearts<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Knowing to make offerings and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">almsgiving<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Bringing benefits to yourselves and to\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Not sexual misconduct and adultery<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Not abusing children\u2019s sexuality<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Being faithful to a legal spouse<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Living peacefully and happily.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Not saying deceptive words<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Only telling the truth<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Right conviction and prestige<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Are always trusted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Determined not to use<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Alcohol and drugs<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Gambling and smoking<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Your minds become lucid and calm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">You frequently contemplate<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Virtues of the Buddha,<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">The Dharma and Sangha,<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Ethics and meditation,<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Wisdom and deliverance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Joy in almsgiving<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Joy in making offerings<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Skillfully sowing and planting the field of merit<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Skillfully cultivating good faculties<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Diligently practicing right mindfulness<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Enlightenment and happiness<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Appear right in the present. (Bell)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Devotees hear clearly<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">The <em>Tathagata<\/em> set the examples:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Observe a flock of cows<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">With the yellow, white ones<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">With the red, black ones<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">The brown ones with yellow spots<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Or the pigeon gray color.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Whether they bring any color<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Or where they come from<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">But their true values<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Depend on their transportable strength.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Those that are healthy<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">are well trained<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Pull the carts strongly and quickly<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Transport many trips<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Are the useful oxen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">All over the world<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Many different kinds of people<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Kings or civilians<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Monastics or lay devotees<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Females or males<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">The young or the old<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Those who observe the precepts<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Live peacefully and calmly<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Become virtuous people<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Become exemplary people<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">For oneself and for others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Making offerings to people like this<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Will obtain great virtuous blessings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">The Tathagata never discriminates<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Between castes and origins<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Those who lack talent, virtue<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Wisdom, and cultivation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Do not enlighten anyone,<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Do not make benefit for anyone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Making offerings to those people<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Without great virtuous blessings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">The Tathagata\u2019s disciples<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Always cultivate wisdom and virtue<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Their hearts direct to the World-Honored One<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Diligently practice the Buddhadharma<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Diligently support the Sangha<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Cultivate the good faculties<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Sow the field of merit<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Attain Nirvana \u2013 true happiness<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Right in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">After letting go of the physical bodies<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">You are born up to a peaceful realm<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">Continue vowing to save living beings<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">In the worlds of gods and human beings<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">practice the Dharma together<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">to benefit themselves and other people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%;\">After they had listened to the Buddha\u2019s teachings, Venerable\u00a0 <em>Sariputta<\/em>, Monastics, <em>Sudatta<\/em> <em>Anathapindika<\/em>, and other An\u0101g\u0101m\u012b <\/em>means the noble person who enters the third holy stream is called the non-returner (<em>An\u0101g\u0101m\u012b<\/em>). This person has attained the Path (<em>Magga<\/em>) (v) and the fruition (<em>Phala<\/em>) (vi) of <em>An\u0101g\u0101m\u012b. <\/em>S. <em>Arahanta <\/em>= or P. <em>Arahant <\/em>means the noble person who enters the fourth holy stream is called the one who has deserved to be offered (1), who has killed the enemies of afflictions (2), who has broken the evil things completely (3), who has made maras of defilements terrified (4), who has ended the samsara of birth and death (5).
