When these causes and conditions change, phenomena also change. This is why we say that all phenomena are like illusions.

A rainbow is a meteorological phenomenon, and is caused by reflection, refraction and dispersion of light in water droplets resulting in a spectrum of light appearing in the sky. It usually takes the form of a multicoloured arc. Rainbows caused by sunlight always appear in the section of the sky directly opposite the sun.

Rainbows can be full circles, however the average observer sees only the arc formed by illuminated droplets above the ground and centred on a line from the sun to the observers eye. Therefore everyone sees the rainbow differently, just as we may all perceive the same thing differently.

How we see or perceive a rainbow, and all phenomena, is dependent on our physical position that we are observing it from, as well as our ability to see, and our state of consciousness at that moment. It is important to note that all of these aspects are in a constant state of flux.

So accept, enjoy and learn from everything you experience in life without attaching to it. It is impermanent and will change. Just let it be as it is. Enjoy your rainbows, then be kind to yourself and let them go.”

●◆● ════ ◆◇◆════ ●◆●

~Dharma Master Andrew. My brief answer follows below.

Questions: “When we pray who or what do we pray to? And the words we say when praying, what do they mean? What is the purpose of praying?

Answer: “When we pray to the Buddha’s and Bodhisattva’s, we are doing so to absorb our mind with the Dharma teachings. To develop the mental conditions that will enable us to gain genuine insight into the meaning of the teachings. For us to be able to purify our mind by enthusiastically and joyfully practising the Dharma accurately, with pure intention.

We should do our very best to mindfully recite important prayers and verses such as homage, refuge and the like, as well as important teachings of the Buddha, and commit them to memory, so that we can recall and access them at anytime and anywhere.

We should contemplate the meaning and develop genuine understanding of these immeasurably precious teachings, and then habituate our mind with genuine insight into the meaning of the words, verses and teachings that we are reciting.

When we mindfully recite verses and teachings, we are engaging our whole being, our speech, our body and our mind.

Of course the mind is the chief, for it is the mind that will understand and realise the purpose, methods, practise of the methods and result of the practise.

Study, recite, remember, practise and share the Dharma well, and eventually you will understand and realise the unification and perfection of inseparable wisdom and method, and attain unsurpassed supreme enlightenment.”

I hope that these words, both the question and the answer, are somewhat helpful to you on your path to enlightenment.”

●◆● ════ ◆◇◆════ ●◆●

~Dharma Master Andrew.
