FAMILY BACKGROUND<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 200%;\">His holiness &#8211; the Most Venerable Elder Th\u00edch Ph\u1ed5 Tu\u1ec7, known as B\u00f9i V\u0103n Qu\u00fd, was born on April 12, 1917 in village 5, Ph\u00f9ng Thi\u1ec7n Commune, B\u1ed3ng H\u1ea3i Canton, now it is Ph\u00f9ng Thi\u1ec7n Village, Kh\u00e1nh Ti\u00ean Commune, Y\u00ean Kh\u00e1nh District, Ninh B\u00ecnh Province. His father was Mr. B\u00f9i Quang O\u00e1nh, His mother was Mrs. Nguy\u1ec5n Th\u1ecb Thinh. His parents were devout Buddhists. His parents are both devout Buddhists. He is the second son in his family with three siblings.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 160%; color: #ff0000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">2. BEHAVIOR, RENUNCIATION, AND DHARMA STUDIES <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 200%;\">He was born in a family with a deep tradition following Buddhism, so the Bodhi seed in him soon blossomed. When he was 9 years old (i.e., 1925), his parents allowed him to go to a Temple to live with his Dharma Master Th\u00edch \u0110\u00e0m C\u01a1, the Abbot of Ph\u00fac Long Temple in Ph\u00fa An village, Kh\u00e1nh Ph\u00fa Commune, Y\u00ean Kh\u00e1nh District, Ninh B\u00ecnh Province and his Master gave permission to him to study ancient Chinese characters with a famous calligraphy teacher named Hi\u1ec7ng in the region.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 200%;\">When he was thirteen years old (i.e., 1929), his Dharma Master allowed him to become a disciple of the Most Venerable Th\u00edch Nguy\u00ean An, the Abbot of the V\u1ecdng Root Temple in Y\u00ean \u0110\u1ed3ng Commune, \u00dd Y\u00ean District, Nam \u0110\u1ecbnh Province. After three years of Dharma cultivation, at the age of sixteen (i.e., 1932), he was allowed to be ordained as a novice monk by the Most Venerable Master of the V\u1ecdng Root Temple at the Great Precepts Transmission Ceremony of Summer Retreat at \u0110\u1ed3ng Cao Temple in Ngh\u0129a H\u01b0ng District, Nam \u0110\u1ecbnh Province.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 200%;\">At the age of eighteen (i.e., 1934), he came to study the Buddha Dharma and take refuge in the Most Venerable Thich Qu\u1ea3ng T\u1ed1n, the Abbot of Vi\u00ean Minh Root Temple in Khai Th\u00e1i Village, Tam Kh\u00ea Commune, Ph\u00fa Xuy\u00ean District, H\u00e0 \u0110\u00f4ng Province (now known as Quang L\u00e3ng Commune, Ph\u00fa Xuy\u00ean District, H\u00e0 N\u1ed9i City). When he was just 20 years old (i.e., 1936), he was ordained as a Bhikkhu Ordination and Bodhisattva Precepts Ordination at the Great Precepts Transmission Ordination Ceremony at the Vi\u00ean Minh Root Temple led by the Most Venerable Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng T\u1ed1n as the Most Venerable <em>Upadhaya<\/em> Precepts Transmission Master (or the Most Venerable Preceptor).<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 200%;\">After receiving the full Precepts, he began the process of going far away to seek the truth. He went to study the Buddha Dharma at almost all of the major mountain Temples and Root Temples at that time, such as T\u1ebf Xuy\u00ean mountain Temple, H\u01b0\u01a1ng T\u00edch mountain Temple, V\u0129nh Nghi\u00eam Root Temple, etc.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 200%;\">3. DHARMA AFFAIRS ACTIVITIES<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 200%;\">Since 1952, he had traveled on a mission to propagate the Dharma at Linh \u1ee8ng Temple, Kim \u0110\u1edbi I Village, H\u1eefu B\u1eb1ng Commune, Ki\u1ebfn Th\u1ee5y District, H\u1ea3i Ph\u00f2ng City. In 1957, he turned back to serve his Master and the Three Jewels at the Vi\u00ean Minh Root Temple in Quang L\u00e3ng Commune, Ph\u00fa Xuy\u00ean District, H\u00e0 N\u1ed9i City.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 200%;\">In 1961, the Most Venerable Th\u00edch Qu\u1ea3ng T\u1ed1n, the second Abbot of the Vi\u00ean Minh Root Temple passed away, Venerable Master Th\u00edch Ph\u1ed5 Tu\u1ec7 was appointed as the third Abbot of the Vi\u00ean Minh Root Temple from that time until the present day.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 200%;\">In 1987, his Holiness the First Supreme Patriarch of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha nominated the three great monks, namely the Most Venerable Th\u00edch Kim C\u01b0\u01a1ng T\u1eed, the Most Venerable Thich Thi\u1ec7n Si\u00eau, and the Most Venerable Th\u00edch T\u00e2m Th\u00f4ng to go to the Vi\u00ean Minh Root Temple to invite the Most Venerable Th\u00edch Ph\u1ed5 Tu\u1ec7 to go to Hanoi Capital to preside over the editing of the Vietnamese Tripitaka and to participate in Buddhist activities of Vietnam Buddhist Sangha. Since then, he went to Hanoi to preside over the editing of the Vietnamese Tripitaka and participate in Buddhist tasks activities of the Sangha. Since then, he has held many key positions \u200bin the Buddhist Sangha Administrative at all levels through the different timelines as follows:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 200%;\">\u2055 2002 -2007: Ph\u00f3 Ph\u00e1p ch\u1ee7 ki\u00eam Ch\u00e1nh Th\u01b0 k\u00fd H\u1ed9i \u0111\u1ed3ng Ch\u1ee9ng minh Gi\u00e1o h\u1ed9i Ph\u1eadt gi\u00e1o Vi\u1ec7t Nam.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 200%;\">\u2055 2003 \u2013 2007: Vi\u1ec7n tr\u01b0\u1edfng Ph\u00e2n vi\u1ec7n Nghi\u00ean c\u1ee9u Ph\u1eadt h\u1ecdc Vi\u1ec7t Nam t\u1ea1i H\u00e0 N\u1ed9i.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 200%;\">\u2055 2003 \u2013 2007: T\u1ed5ng Bi\u00ean t\u1eadp t\u1ea1p ch\u00ed Nghi\u00ean c\u1ee9u Ph\u1eadt h\u1ecdc Vi\u1ec7t Nam.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 200%;\">\u2055 2002 -2007: Deputy Supreme Patriarch-cum-Chief Secretary of the Supreme Sangha Council of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 200%;\">\u2055 2003 &#8211; 2007: Rector of the \u200bVietnam Buddhist Studies Sub-Institute in Hanoi.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 200%;\">\u2055 2003 \u2013 2007: Editor-in-Chief of Vietnam Buddhist Studies Journal.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 200%;\">\u2055 2007 \u2013 At present, his Holiness, the Third Supreme Patriarch of the Supreme Sa\u1e45gha Council of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 200%;\">\u2055 2009 \u2013 At present, Chief Dharma Master of Vassa- raining\/ Sunny Season Retreats in Temples and Viharas in different provinces and Cities<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 200%;\">\u2055 2009 \u2013 At present, the Most Venerable Upadhaya Precepts Transmission Master of the Great Precepts Transmission Ordination Ceremonies in various provinces and cities.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 200%;\">In addition to undertaking various honorable monastic positions in the Sangha, the Most Venerable also has many merits to contribute to the career of great national unity, from the Popular Education movement to the movement of building cooperatives after peace has returned to the country. Along with taking care of Temples whose scenes, contributing to the construction of the homeland, he is a really virtuous monk, always keeping harmony and solidarity of religions to build great unity of the whole nation. He participated as a member of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front for many terms, from the 4th to the 9th term today.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 180%; color: #ff0000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">4. TRANSLATED AND WRITTEN WORKS<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 200%;\">He is a noble and virtuous monk who has great wisdom thoroughly understands the Tripitaka (the Buddha\u2019s moral teachings, meditative concentration, and commentaries). In particular, he made many important contributions in compiling, translating, and composing works on Vietnamese Buddhist studies.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 200%;\">He devoted his life to compiling and commenting on the Great Buddhist Dictionary, notes and lectures on the <em>\u015a\u016bra\u1e45gama<\/em> S\u016btra, the Outline of the Lotus Sutra, the Hundred Example Sutra, the Three Sutras of the Buddha and Patriarchs, Buddhist studies are the study of wisdom, the Shorter <em>Sukhavativyuha<\/em> Sutra, the <em>Prajna<\/em> Sound Echoing, the Simplified <em>Pratimoksa<\/em> for Bhikkhus and Bhikkhunis.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 200%;\">In addition to the above compiled, translated, and written works on Buddhist studies, he also composed many poems of Tang prosody poetry, in the form of eight lines and seven words in each line for young generation to study and remember them clearly in <em>Vassa <\/em>&#8211; rains\/summer Retreats.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 140%; color: #ff0000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">5. RECOGNITION OF \u200bCERTIFICATES OF MERITS MEDALS<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 200%;\">Throughout his life of practicing the <em>Buddhadharma<\/em> at the Vi\u00ean Minh Root Temple, as well as the process of participating in Buddhist works activities of the Sangha and society, the Most Venerable Master has made many various contributions to the Dharma and the Nation.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 200%;\">Those merits have always been respectfully recognized by the Sangha and State, awarded many noble awards such as: Medal of Ho Chi Minh; Second Class Independence Medal; Medal of great national unity; Medal for the career of Great National <em>solidarity<\/em>, Certificates of Merit from the government Prime Minister, Certificates of Merits from the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front and many Certificates of commending merits from the Sangha.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 200%;\">6. ENTERING NIRVANA <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 200%;\">Experiencing 105 years of being present in the world, with 85 years old of <em>vassa<\/em> &#8211; monastic age, on the throne of Supreme Patriarch of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, he devoted his whole life to the ideal of propagating the Dharma for benefiting living beings.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 200%;\">His merit has greatly contributed to the career of lightening fame of Buddhism and the Vietnamese nation. His life from the beginning of renunciation to the time when his mission of Dharma propagation is fulfilled has always been a shining example in his own Dharma practice for both monastics and laypeople.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 200%;\">He always observed the Dharma precepts purely as his bodily embodiment for teaching and encouraging young generations. His life is a symbol of the spirit of Compassion &#8211; Wisdom &#8211; Courage, especially in his altruistic and selfless deeds, wholeheartedly devoted to the career of spreading the Dharma, serving people, and building great national unity today more and more strongly.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 200%;\">In the sacred moment of interaction, his merit of Dharma propagation perfected, his Holiness, Most Venerable Elder Master, the Supreme Patriarch of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha passed away at 03:22 on October 21, 2021 (September 16, Year of the Ox) at the Vien Minh Root Temple, in Quang L\u00e3ng Commune, Ph\u00fa Xuy\u00ean District, Hanoi City.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 200%;\">He left, leaving in the hearts of fourfold assembly disciples, including monks, nuns, Vietnamese lay male and female Buddhist devotees at home and abroad, with infinite love, respect, and regret.
