Trying to put my mind at ease

And ready to please

But all these things that get me high

Are only things just passing by

So why do I care for these things at all

So let this sweet life unveil

To reveal its many hidden tales

How we came to be

Like this and that, and that and me

I’m sure that we’d all agree

Life is like an endless sea

Into which we set sail, together, free

Oh oh oh, Living in good company

I’ve had better days

And I should have better ways

And with all this time that’s passed us by

I ask myself why

Why do we bother with this time at all

We should let this sweet life unveil

It will reveal so many hidden tales

Of how we came to be

Like this and that, and you and me

I’m sure that we’d all agree

Life is like an endless sea

Into which we set sail, together, free

Oh oh oh, Living in good company

Living in good company

You are good company

And so this sweet life unveils

To reveal its many hidden tales

How we came to be

Like this and that, and you and me

I’m sure that we’d all agree

Life is like an endless sea

Into which we set sail, together, free

Oh oh oh, Living in good company

Living in good company

You are good company

COMMENTARY ON THE MEANING OF MY ‘IN GOOD COMPANY’ SONG

◆●════◆◇◆ ════ ●◆●

‘In Good Company’ is a Dharma song I wrote in 2002 about Interdependency, Inter-connectedness, Unity and Unveiling Buddha-Nature. The song appears on both the Fearless CD and the Birth of the Buddha CD that I recorded with Dharma brother Roger McLachlan in 2004 and 2010 respectively.

The song can be understood on an obvious level by taking the words and expression literally, as well as on a deeper level.

Here’s a very brief explanation of the hidden meaning of these words:

‘Trying to put my mind at ease’ – Practise meditation, and develop one-pointed concentration and non-attachment;

‘And ready to please’ – Develop and practise compassion and loving-kindness;

‘But all these things that get me high’ – All things that appear to give pleasure;

‘Are only things just passing by’ – Such things are impermanent, constantly changing;

‘So why do I care for these things at all’ – So why remain attached to that which is impermanent and constantly changing;

‘So let this sweet life unveil’ – Practise non-attachment;

‘To reveal its many hidden tales’ – Live in the present;

‘How we came to be’ – Understand the universal law of karma;

‘Like this and that, and that and me’ – Understand the law of interdependent origination;

‘I’m sure that we’d all agree’ – We are all related and interconnected;

‘Life is like an endless sea’ – Understand cyclic existence;

‘Into which we set sail, together, free’ – Help each other to be free from cyclic existence;

‘Oh oh oh, Living in good company’ – May we all attain Enlightenment;

‘I’ve had better days’ – Eradicate all mental afflictions;

‘And I should have better ways’ – Perfect Enlightened qualities;

‘And with all this time that’s passed us by’ – Eradicate attachment to self and other;

‘I ask myself why’ – There is no self or other;

‘Why do we bother with this time at all’ – Realise the ultimate truth of Emptiness;

‘We should let this sweet life unveil’ – Practise non-attachment;

‘It will reveal so many hidden tales’ – Live in the present;

‘Of how we came to be’ – Understand the universal law of karma;

‘Like this and that, and you and me’ – Understand the law of interdependent origination;

‘I’m sure that we’d all agree’ – We are all related and interconnected;

‘Life is like an endless sea’ – Understand cyclic existence;

‘Into which we set sail, together, free’ – Help each other to be free from cyclic existence;

‘Oh oh oh, Living in good company’ – May we all attain Enlightenment;

‘Living in good company’ – May we all attain Enlightenment;

‘You are good company’ – Unveil Buddha-Nature;

‘And so this sweet life unveils’ – Practise non-attachment;

‘To reveal its many hidden tales’ – Live in the present;

‘How we came to be’ – Understand the universal law of karma;

‘Like this and that, and you and me’ – Understand the law of interdependent origination;

‘I’m sure that we’d all agree’ – We are all related and interconnected;

‘Life is like an endless sea’ – Understand cyclic existence;

‘Into which we set sail, together, free’ – Help each other to be free from cyclic existence;

‘Oh oh oh, Living in good company’ – May we all attain Enlightenment;

‘Living in good company’ – May we all attain Enlightenment;

‘You are good company’ – – Unveil Buddha-Nature;
