EXISTENCE & PHENOMENA, CAUSE & EFFECT

“All existence and all phenomena, both physical and mental, have the nature of impermanence and suffering, and have no self-identity. They are always changing. Even our happiness does not last. We don’t always get what we want, and sometimes get what we don’t want.

Nothing, no matter or particle, no conception or consciousness, exists by itself. No god, no human, no mammal, no reptile, no amphibian, no insect, no bacteria, no cell, no molecule, no atom, no proton, no electron, and no neutron, no electric, magnetic, or gravitational field, no space exists by itself.

They all have no entity on their own. No things exist by themselves, for themselves, with themselves or of themselves. All exist only in interrelation. They exist as themselves only in concept and delusion. They exist only in the process of transition. They exist only in consequence of cause and effect.

This is the situation of all matter and particles in this universe. All phenomena, physical or mental, arise and cease due to cause and effect.

Approximately 100 years ago, scientists believed that all phenomena could be traced back to the atom. Over time, due to more complex and advanced technology, such as more superior microscopes, they changed their views, as their understanding became deeper and clearer. In recent times, they have discovered that all phenomena actually arise from nothing at all due to cause and effect.

Hence, all phenomena are impermanent, have the nature of suffering, and do not exist independently. That is, they exist interdependently, as consequences of cause and effect.

In relation to cause and effect, we could say there are three types: positive, negative, and indifferent. When we have positive intentions and thoughts, actions or words, we create positive effects. When we have negative intentions and thoughts, actions or words, we create negative effects. When we have indifferent, or neutral, intentions and thoughts, actions or words, we create indifferent or neutral effects.

Hence, all of the conditions we experience in our lives, however obvious or subtle, whether positive, negative or indifferent, are a result of our past thoughts, actions, and words.

If we create positive causes now, that is, engage in positive thoughts, actions and speech, and abstain from creating negative causes, we will create positive outcomes in our future. This will result in us living a happy and meaningful life. It is really up to us.”
